BOOK A CONDUCTED TOUR IN LAND OF ETRUSCANS- Tarquinia - Palazzo Farnese a Caprarola - Civita di Bagnoregio

The basilica of Santa Maria della Quercia is a wonderful example of early Renaissance architecture. Situated in the suburb of Viterbo, the church was built between 1470 and the late 1500’s, and many illustrious architects worked on it over the years. The building was designed by Giuliano da Sangallo and its facade was decorated with glazed earthenware works by Andrea della Robbia. The church contains a marble ‘tempietto’ with a miraculous image of the Madonna and Child painted in the early 15th century. The wonderful coffered ceiling by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger was decorated with gold leaf in the mid-sixteenth century. In the church there are also some remarkable paintings, among which the Coronation of the Virgin and the Saints by Bartolomeo della Porta (16th century). A little museum with old documents, relics and votive objects is open on demand. Nearby the church is a splendid cloister built in Gothic-Renaissance style. Its walls were frescoed in the 17th century with scene representing some miracles made by the Madonna della Quercia.
